Eligibility Criteria

How to determine if your program will be eligible for the HIEP Grant

Students must fulfill all of the following prerequisites in order to apply for HIEP funding:

  • Must be a full-time IU Bloomington undergraduate student.
(note: students do not have to be members of the Hutton Honors College to apply for HIEP funding)
  • Must have completed at least one full semester (12 credits) of graded undergraduate coursework at IU Bloomington.
  • Must have either a cumulative 3.40 GPA or a major GPA of 3.70 in their undergraduate coursework.
  • Must complete all travels before their official IU graduation date. (note: students can consult their advisor and/or the Registrar about pushing back their graduation date in order to be eligible for HIEP funding)

Please note that HIEP Grant funding is made to individual students on a merit basis. It may not be used to provide blanket support for multiple students for any particular overseas experience or program.

Who is not eligible?

Students who fall into any of the categories listed below are not eligible to receive HIEP funding:

  • Students traveling to countries given Level 3 or 4 Travel Advisories on the U.S. Department of State's Travel Warning List are not eligible. EXCEPTION: These programs vetted and approved by OSAC (IU's Overseas Study Advisory Council).
  • Students who have previously received HIEP funding are not eligible. All HIEP awards are one-time-only.
  • Students with major IU scholarships that specifically include funding for an overseas study experience are not eligible. This includes students in the following:
    1. Robbins/Hutton Scholarship Fund recipients through LAMP (note: LAMP students cannot receive the HIEP Grant and the Robbins/Hutton Scholarship concurrently)
    2. Kelley Scholars Program (note: Kelley Scholars cannot receive HIEP Grants for short-term study tour programs, such as BUS-X272, but may receive funding for other programs)
  • Participants of Hutton Honors Study Abroad programs are ineligible to apply for HIEP Grant funding for those experiences, and should see their program pages for scholarship information.
