In 2014, I was introduced to a graduate student from Ghana, Bernard Woma, a famous gyil (xylophone) musician who ran a school focused on teaching students traditional Ghanaian music, art, and dance. As soon as I learned about the Dagara Music Center (DMC), I knew that I had to go. I realized that, as a dancer, I would learn so much more about the country, the culture, and people, through artistic mediums, than I ever could in a university classroom.
